WATCH: Bill Maher says Republicans would secretly ‘f*cking love it’ if Trump were jailed

On his Friday show “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host said Republicans would “secretly love it” if Trump were jailed over January 6 as it would take him out of the spotlight.

“I think they would f*cking love it because he’s out of the way” and Republicans could claim it’s “not our fault,” Maher said.

Maher said Republican’s would respond to Trump’s incarceration “the way our country secretly loved it when Israel would bomb Iraq, or Iran.”

Guest and Politico White House Editor Sam Stein agreed and mentioned that behind closed doors Republicans “privately can’t stand the guy” and said “I don’t know if they want him shackled, but they wouldn’t totally be disappointed.”

Linguist John McWhorter was also at the table and mentioned Trump would “have the same amount of fans” whether he was in jail or not, according to Fox News.

“It would not affect who would vote for him,” McWhorter said, “because this belief in him has become a kind of religion, it would really affect the way people felt about him and whether or not people voted for him if this came out exactly the way you were hoping.”

McWhorter then said that January 6 was brought on because of “the megalomaniacal notions of Trump personally and craven people following him.”

Maher said that Attorney General Merrick Garland must make a “big decision,” called the January 6 committee hearings “impressive,” and said he does think Trump should go to court over the issue.

The HBO host is also convinced that Trump would make “subsequent attempts” to overthrow the government because he “already attempted it.”

As to allegations that this is a politically fetishized event Maher said, “it couldn’t possibly be all political, because all the people that are witnesses and prosecuting it are Republicans!”

Two out of the nine committee members are Republican, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both of whom have been disavowed by the GOP.
