Memphis livestream shooter had been imprisoned, released early for aggravated assault

Four people are dead and three injured after suspect 19-year-old Ezekiel Kelly went on a shooting spree in Memphis, Tennessee on Wednesday and live streamed his rampage on Facebook.

The Daily Mail reports that Kelly was convicted of aggravated assault in 2021 and sentenced to three years, but released early. Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said, “If Mr. Kelly served his full three-year sentence, he would still be in prison today and four of our fellow citizens would still be alive.”

This is the second high-profile crime-related Memphis tragedy within a week as suspect Cleotha Abston was charged Tuesday for the kidnapping and murder of beloved mother and schoolteacher Eliza Fletcher.

Ezekiel Kelly allegedly began his frenzy around 12:56 am on Wednesday morning when he gunned down a man in his driveway. He then began his day and brandished his weapon randomly around town. Kelly then unloaded on another man around 4:38 pm as he rested in his car, killing him instantly. A few minutes later he shot a woman in the leg near Memphis’ I-240. She survived having only been shot in the leg.

With two dead and one injured and with Kelly just randomly driving around the city shooting, he entered an AutoZone and blasted an unaware man waiting in line around 6pm.

By that time he was live streaming his spree while uttering loosely strung together phrases such as “no faking.”

Kelly shot and killed a woman at 7:23 pm during a carjacking and shot another man within minutes who survived.

The Memphis Police Department put out an alert around 8 pm for a 19-year-old black male who was reportedly driving around in a gray Toyota SUV, the dead woman’s vehicle. ┬áLater the police identified Kelly by name. The suspect killed his last victim at 8:55 pm, another woman who he tried to carjack to again switch vehicles.

He carjacked another driver of a Dodge Challenger and then led police on a high-speed chase on I-55 that eventually led to his arrest. Kelly was grinning with an ear-wide smile in his mugshot.
