Freedom Convoy organizer Pat King granted bail with conditions

After five months behind bars at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, Freedom Convoy organizer Pat King has been granted bail. His release comes with a lengthy number of conditions.

King was arrested and sentenced to jail on February 18.

On Monday, Justice Anne London-Weinstein delivered her decision in an Ottawa courtroom, informing King that upon being let out of jail, he must follow a strict set of rules before his pre-trial hearings. The Justice’s reasoning was not made available due to a publication ban.

As CityNews reports, King has to pay $25,000 and is now required to leave Ottawa within twenty-four hours and fly back to Edmonton, where he will be required to live with and be employed under a surety who will guarantee he does not break any of his bail conditions.

The conditions include having no contact with other Freedom Convoy leaders, except for legal reasons, no protesting, no social media of any form, and no possession of weapons.

King is also required to abide by a curfew of 10 pm to 6am.

Reports say King was emotional as his verdict was read, “shedding tears in the prisoner’s box.”

Earlier this month, fellow Freedom Convoy organizer Tamara Lich was denied bail. The judge said the court found Lich had not met her onus under tertiary grounds and that detention was necessary to “maintain the administration of justice.”

Both her and King were arrested and charged over their involvement in the event, which saw thousands descend on Ottawa in February to protest the Trudeau Liberals’ Covid regulations, namely vaccine mandates.

King was denied bail after being arrested, and in April, a second bail review process was halted after his attorney’s computer was allegedly hacked.

He was charged with multiple counts of mischief, obstructing a peace officer, counselling others to commit mischief, counselling to commit intimidation, counselling to obstruct police, and obstructing one or more highways.
