DC cop fatally shot in training session by retired lieutenant

A retired Washington, DC police lieutenant shot and killed a fellow officer during a Thursday training session at a library, police said.

In a press conference following the incident that afternoon, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee said the shooting occurred in the city’s Anacostia Library.

Maurica Manyan, 25, of Indian Head, Maryland was the public library special police officer who was allegedly shot by former lieutenant Jesse Porter, 58, causing her death. Porter has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, police told NBC News4.

Porter was conducting training on how to properly use an extended baton at the time of the shooting and the Maryland Police Department is currently working with the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia to find out exactly how Manyan was shot.

“Officers arrived at this location and found a library police officer unconscious suffering from a gunshot wound,” Contee said during the conference. “What we’ve learned so far is that there was a training that was taking place.”

Manyan was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. Other library police officers, including the suspect, were interviewed late Thursday afternoon as part of the investigation, reported the Daily Wire.

“The training was being conducted by a retired member of the Metropolitan Police Department, a retired lieutenant, who was conducting training in one of the training rooms, and at some point,” Contee continued, “at the end of the training, the retired lieutenant fired a shot from a weapon that struck this police officer.”

Sources told News4 that Porter drew a handgun as part of the demonstration, but fired a single shot that struck the library police officer in the chest. Homicide detectives that arrived on scene are investigating why Porter’s gun was loaded with live ammunition during a training session.

“I don’t have answers as to why the live firearm was in ASP baton training,” Contee said.
